Dry Eye Care

At ExaminEyes we can diagnose and treat your dry eye symptoms. We will work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs and specific symptoms. Though there are many considerations to consider as to what the underlying cause is for dryness of the eyes, in this day and age we spend numerous hours per day more or less staring at screens.

Therefore, many dry eye cases are caused by lack of proper blinking and evaporation of the tears which leads to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Patients with this condition have an abnormality of the proper function of the meibomian glands that run along our eyelid margins. The normal function for the meibum glands is to secrete meibomian into our tears which then aids the tears to not evaporate and contains antimicrobial properties that keep the lid margin clear from bacterial overgrowth. When the function is compromised, the normal meibum, that is usually an olive oil consistency, becomes more like a pasty whitish pus-like like secretion that doesn’t normally serve the same purpose for the tears as the natural meibum.

Patients with MGD often have an irregular shape of the lid margins due to glands either being capped off and nonfunctional or from retracting downwards. Patients with this condition can often have severe inflammation and bacterial overgrowth of the lid that exacerbates the problem. Conventional treatment of dry eye may consist of eye drops, artificial tears, hot compress, and eyelid scrubs. These treatments are meant to provide temporary relief of symptoms, instead of treating the root cause of the condition.

Driven to Seek Change

At ExaminEyes, we are happy to have the state-of-the-art treatment for dry eye called IPL (Intense Pulse Light). The is a gentle hand-held device that the doctor applies to the skin below your eyes to photocoagulate or close small blood vessels that have developed in response to chronic inflammation surrounding the meibomian glands of the eyes. With this treatment application the root of the cause is addressed and the meibomian glands can be revitalized to return to their normal function.
