In its early years a microkeratome blade was used to create a corneal flap which was then carefully lifted before applying an excimer laser to reshape the corneal bed.  Over the years advancements in LASIK have resulted in a new gold standard.  Rather than using the microkeratome to create a corneal flap, surgeons now use the femtosecond laser. This procedure is known as bladeless LASIK. The femtosecond laser releases short pulses of infrared energy, allowing for enhanced precision in making the corneal flap.

Additionally, new wavefront technology of the excimer laser itself evaluates the patients unique eye characteristics ahead of their LASIK procedure so that it can be programmed into the excimer laser, increasing its precision for your best visual outcome.
